As a bored college student, I found myself in a rut - doing the same things every day and definitely feeling like life was passing me by.
So I set up a challenge for myself. I wrote out a few fun things to do on some cards, shuffled them and held myself accountable -- whatever card I flipped next, I would do, no matter what.
That evening still stands out as one of the most fun evenings in my life.
Shuffle My Life was born.
I soon realized it was no fun carrying a pack of cards around, and I also wanted to see what others thought of the idea.
Having almost no tech skills, I mangled together a Wordpress site. Originally it was just images of the cards - later on, each 'task' was its own Wordpress page.
Very hacked-together, but it worked! Folks on Reddit seemed to like it too, especially on /r/GetMotivated.
Another change happened around 2013, when I began to develop a mobile version - great for people wherever they are.
Originally just a mobile version of the website, later a native app on Android! Here's an early version from 2015.
Card packs! By this point, there were over 700 'tasks' in the app, along with other features like group tasks and achievements.
A detour! At this point I paused Shuffle My Life to work on Harbour, a 'spiritual successor' which gave everyone a few challenges every day. Here, I was able to add some fun social features as everyone could share their experiences. Harbour was available on iOS and Android.
A decade after I sat in that college dorm room, I've pulled together all my learnings over the years to bring you the definitive version of Shuffle My Life. Let's see what's next!
